Inspired by a Legacy. Created for the Community.

The Cogelow Art Center was founded on a simple but powerful idea: great art has the ability to bring people together.

Our mission is to enrich lives and build a vibrant community by celebrating creative expression, inspiring connections through shared artistic experiences, and showcasing the extraordinary work of internationally renowned woodcarver Frederic "Fred" Cogelow.

Fred's remarkable carvings have captivated audiences around the world, yet his greatest legacy reaches far beyond the intricate detail of his work. His humility, humor, generosity, and love of storytelling continue to inspire everyone who discovers his art. A self-taught artist with an unmistakable style, Fred transformed ordinary pieces of wood into extraordinary works that celebrated people, history, and everyday life. His carvings were often accompanied by "Cogelese," his own playful, phonetically written language that became a signature part of his work. His carvings are a treasured cultural asset worthy of preservation and celebration for generations to come.

The vision for the Cogelow Art Center began when artist Fernando Alvarado first toured one of Fred Cogelow's exhibitions. Moved by the significance of Fred's life's work, Fernando remarked, "Fred needs a museum." That simple observation sparked conversations with lawyer David Moody and others who shared a common belief: preserving Fred's legacy could become the foundation for something even greater—a place where art, creativity, and community flourish together.

As plans developed and the organization was legally formed, the vision expanded beyond honoring one remarkable artist. The Cogelow Art Center will become a welcoming regional destination where creativity is celebrated every day. Alongside permanent exhibits showcasing Fred Cogelow's work, the center will provide opportunities for emerging and established local and regional artists to exhibit, create, teach, and inspire. Through educational programs, workshops, studio space, exhibits, and community gathering areas, people of all ages and abilities will have opportunities to experience the arts in meaningful and accessible ways.

The Cogelow Art Center is more than a museum. It is a place where creativity sparks curiosity, artists find opportunity, lifelong learning is encouraged, and neighbors gather to share ideas, stories, and inspiration. By building partnerships throughout the region, the center will strengthen the cultural vitality of our communities while encouraging collaboration and appreciation for the arts.

Plans for the future home of the Cogelow Art Center continue to take shape as community members, partners, artists, and supporters work together to bring this vision to life. While the location is still being determined, the commitment remains unchanged: to create a destination that honors Fred Cogelow's legacy while inspiring future generations of artists, makers, and dreamers. The future home of the Cogelow Art Center will provide a permanent destination where visitors can experience Fred's work alongside changing exhibits, educational programming, and creative experiences year-round.

We invite you to be part of this journey. Whether you share a passion for art, value preserving local history, or believe in the power of creativity to strengthen communities, there is a place for you in the story of the Cogelow Art Center. Together, we are building a lasting legacy—one that celebrates creativity, preserves history, and inspires connection for generations to come. Fred's legacy was the spark, but the community art center is the lasting vision of Fred and Doris Cogelow and our organization.
